With millions of visitors flocking to Washington D.C. each year, many of them choose to stay in Reston, Virginia. Convenient to the Washington Dulles International Airport and located within the capital's metropolitan area, this planned community serves as the perfect home base for a trip to D.C. When planning your trip to the nation's capital, consider the comfortable hotels Reston offers.

Reston was an idea conceived by Robert E. Simon in 1964 as the first planned community in America. It was named for his initials. Simon pictured higher density housing that would conserve open space and he utilized mixed-use areas for recreation, education, industry, business and housing. Reston consists of five village centers and one main town center. It was designed so the apartments and town homes cluster around each village center.

As a world-renowned planned community, Reston was ranked as one of the top 100 'Best Places to Live' by Money Magazine. The Reston Town Center acts as the ideal downtown and features a wide variety of shopping, dining options, entertainment and accommodations. The Town Center's open-air pavilion hosts year-round activities, which include free summer concerts, the Northern Virginia Fine Arts Festival and winter ice-skating.

For a chance to learn more about the history and development of the city, visit the Reston Museum. It features a collection of materials related to the town's government, architecture, culture and social life going back to its inception in 1965. The museum store offers several Reston souvenir options and even gives visitors an opportunity to leave their names engraved on a commemorative brick that will forever be on display in the Plaza at the Lake Anne Village Center.

The Lake Anne Plaza is one of the best ways to become better acquainted with the locale. The traditional American menus along with ethnic food options suit any palate and bargain hunters will appreciate the consignment shops and vintage curios. The entire plaza is a free Wi-Fi zone, meaning you can bring your laptop for online work or play, all while sitting in the beautiful outdoors of the plaza. Lake Anne is also the perfect place to bring the kids. The younger crowd is free to splash in the fountain and play on the boat sculpture. There are also summertime kids' programs twice a week to keep them entertained.

For a little more family fun visit the Water Mine Family Swimmin' Hole at Lake Fairfax Park. This attraction offers more than an acre of water fun such as slides, showers and sprays, all circled by a tubing river. The amusement park features an 'old west' theme complete with covered wagons and ore carts. In addition to the Swimmin' Hole, the park consists of 18 acres of trout fishing, pedal boat rides, tour boats and campsites. It's a blast for the entire family.

Dining in Reston is a refreshing experience. There are several open-air cafés and bistros serving everything from classic French fare to American pancakes. Have sushi delivered to your hotel room or stop by the tavern to watch a game.

The Greater Reston Arts Center presents stunning contemporary art that showcases new ideas. Regional artists display pieces that convey social themes and exhibits change on a regular basis. The arts center also provides educational opportunities to the public by way of youth and family programs that deepen art appreciation.

The neighborhoods are all linked by walking and bicycle paths, making it easy to get around. Each village center was planned and designed to be a half-mile walk from most of the homes in Reston, so commuting is a dream. Public parking lots were specifically designed to be easy to locate. If you are arriving via the Washington Dulles International Airport, the hotels Reston features are within a ten minutes' drive. Arlington National Cemetery and the nation's capital are approximately thirty minutes away.

Some of the hotels Reston offers feature on-site restaurants, spas and fitness centers. They may also allow pets and provide an airport shuttle service. Complimentary amenities generally include newspapers, free parking, swimming pools, laundry and room service.
